1. Brush your Tape in Hair Extensions Properly
While brushing your hair seems like such a simple, mundane task, it’s actually much more elaborate than you may think. This is especially true when wearing tape in hair extensions. Here are some tips to brush your tape in tresses:
* Choose the right hair brush.
When brush your
tape in human hair extensions, a double row steel tooth comb is always better than a plastic or wooden one. Loop brush is a default choice, and the bristle brush or boar bristle brush is used to do massive detangling.
* Brush your tape in hair extensions at least twice a day (morning and night).
The brushing process should be repeated a couple of times a day and this is something you should not forget to do. If you comb it regularly, tangling will be a thing of the past and you won’t need to buy new human hair extensions every couple of months.
* Brush tape in hair extensions before the shower as it becomes weaker when wet. After washing, you should first towel dry it. Don’t rub it aggressively as it’s known to cause further tangles or matting. Just tap it gently. You can also use this brushing technique in the shower, if you have a little bit of conditioner in your hair.
* Brush from the bottom up to deter tangles, pulling, and stress. Take small sections of the hair and starting from the bottom, gently untangle it piece by piece. Always hold the section of the hair with your hand and continue from bottom to top. Just be patient and your hair will be perfectly brushed in no time
2. Wash & Condition With Care
When shampooing your hair, it is important that they tilt your head back and gently massage from the top of the head downwards. 3. How Often Should You Wash Extensions?

Instead of drying in a scrubbing motion, encourage your clients to wrap their hair in a towel to remove the initial moisture. If using a blowdryer, it’s important to keep the heat at a medium temperature to avoid heat damage. Once the hair is about 50% dry, brushes and other hair styling tools can be used for styling.
5. DO’s & DON’Ts
There are a number of do’s and don’ts when it comes to styling & caring for tape-in extensions:
DO:
- Use a heat protestant before any styling (the dangler I linked has one in it). I also use this one as an added protection just on my ends!
- Gently brush them several times a day using an extension brush like this one that won’t catch on your bonds.
- Braid your hair or put it in a low pony before sleeping to avoid tangling.
- Always dry your hair or use a good dry shampoo post-workout.
- Head to the stylist every 8-10 weeks to have them moved (generally when you can start to see them and they’re harder to hide!)
- Use non-damaging hair ties like these.
DON’T:
- Sleep with wet tape in human hair extensions because this can damage them!
- Use a regular brush on wet human hair extensions
- Use oil based products near the roots (like argan oil or Moroccan Oil) because this can loosen the bonds.
- Let products build up between the layers or on your scalp – make sure to wash when you need to!
With a proper care, your tape in hair extensions can last up to 6 months. The lifetime of hair extensions is determined by you. That’s why you should take your time and do the maintenance.
